Wherwell is a much-photographed village of timber-framed and thatched cottages beside the River Test. A Benedictine nunnery, Wherwell Priory, stood here from Saxon times until the Dissolution, though little now remains. Local legend tells of a cockatrice, a monstrous serpent said to have been hatched in the priory crypt. Andover station is about 6km to the north-west.
