The 15th-century Bell Inn at Waltham St Lawrence is owned outright by the village: a 1608 bequest left the building to the parish, and its rents still go to local causes. Around it stands an old East-Berkshire village of timbered houses and a flint church, set among quiet lanes and farmland.
