Thatched cottages line the Avon at Stratford-sub-Castle, beneath the grassy ramparts of Old Sarum, the Iron Age hillfort and deserted medieval city just above. Old Sarum was England’s most notorious rotten borough, sending two MPs to Parliament from an empty hill until reform in 1832. Walking routes north out of Salisbury run through the village. Salisbury station is about 2km south.
