Eight acres of terraces, old roses and pools wrap a 17th-century house on the Avon at Middle Woodford. The diplomat Louis Greville, helped by Harold Peto, added a Japanese water garden in the 1900s, complete with a thatched tea house and scarlet Nikko bridge shipped over from Japan. The garden opens from March to October with an admission charge — opening days and times are on the garden’s own website. Salisbury station sits about 7km to the south.
