Longford Castle is an Elizabethan house built in the 1590s for Sir Thomas Gorges in an unusual triangular plan, its three round towers said to stand for the Trinity — construction was famously part-funded by silver salvaged from a wrecked Spanish Armada ship. Still the private home of the Bouverie family, Earls of Radnor, it holds a major art collection, much of it on long-term loan to the National Gallery. Access reflects that link: the castle opens only for a handful of pre-booked guided tours each summer, run by the National Gallery from Salisbury. The River Avon runs along the edge of the grounds.
