John Arkell founded this brewery at Kingsdown on the edge of Swindon in 1843, and five generations of the family have kept it going since. Beer is still made in the original Victorian brewhouse, a tower design where the malt goes in at the top and casks come out at the bottom. There’s a tap room and shop on site, and tours run by arrangement. Swindon station is about 3km to the south-west.
