An Elizabethan prodigy house begun by Sir John Thynne and largely finished around 1580, Longleat sits in a park landscaped by Capability Brown. In 1966 the family opened the grounds as the first drive-through safari park outside Africa, so lions and giraffes now share Brown’s parkland with the house tours. Paid entry near Warminster; Frome station is about 6km to the north-west.
