Sherston strings a broad high street of honey-coloured cottages along a ridge near the Gloucestershire border. Local legend makes it the site of a 1016 battle where a warrior called Rattlebone fought Cnut’s Danes for Edmund Ironside; the village pub still carries his name. Every July the place holds a boules festival on the market pitches.
