The national arboretum spreads around 15,000 trees across 600 acres near Tetbury, a collection begun by the Victorian landowner Robert Holford in 1829 and now run by Forestry England. It’s best known for autumn, when the Japanese maples turn — among the finest such displays anywhere. Paid entry, open year-round, with a treetop walkway and miles of paths through the glades. Kemble, the nearest station, is a fair way off at about 15km.
