Imber was cleared of its people in 1943 so the Army could train on Salisbury Plain, and never handed back. Its 13th-century church is the one intact building left, with faded medieval wall paintings including a scene of the Seven Deadly Sins. It opens only on a handful of days a year, when the ranges let visitors in, so check the dates before setting out. Warminster is the nearest station, about 9km west.
