Steeple Ashton lost its steeple in 1670, when lightning struck the spire in July and again in October, bringing it down and killing two men at work on the repairs. It was never rebuilt, though the grand Perpendicular church remains. The former weaving village keeps its market cross, village pump and old lock-up around the street. Trowbridge station is about 6km west.
