Geoffrey Jellicoe called Shute House his own favourite among the gardens he designed. Water runs through it everywhere — the young River Nadder channelled into rills, a canal and splashing pools, past a box parterre and a long camellia walk. It’s still a private family garden, opening only a handful of days a year for the National Garden Scheme, plus occasional guided tours by arrangement. Wardour Castle and Old Wardour Castle is a few miles north-east.
