At around 210m up on Cranborne Chase, Ashmore is the highest village in Dorset. Flint and brick cottages ring a round dew-pond dug into the chalk to hold rainwater, since there’s no spring this high on the downs. It’s a quiet spot to start a walk into the beech hangers and old droving tracks that run across the Chase.
