Shaftesbury sits high on a greensand hill with the Blackmore Vale spread below. Its famous sight is Gold Hill, a steep cobbled lane of stepped cottages beside the old abbey wall, used by Ridley Scott for the 1973 Hovis ‘Bike Ride’ advert. The abbey itself was founded by King Alfred in the late 9th century and is now a ruin with a garden and small museum.
