General Pitt Rivers laid out these pleasure grounds in 1880 on the edge of Cranborne Chase, among the first private gardens anywhere opened for the public to enjoy — free at the time, and drawing thousands on a summer Sunday. Ornamental buildings, an open-air theatre and roaming peacocks fill the eleven acres. Near Tollard Royal; paid entry now, on limited days, and sometimes closed for events.
