Dovecotes like this one housed pigeons for their meat and eggs, a useful supply of fresh food in winter centuries before refrigeration, and building one was once a privilege reserved for lords of the manor. Netheravon’s dovecote went up in the early 18th century and once held around 700 chalk nesting boxes lining its inside walls, under a pyramid roof of tiles. You can’t get near it or go inside — English Heritage’s viewing point is in the village’s Millennium Park, around 20 metres from the building, looking across a private field. Stonehenge is a short drive south.
