Bulford Kiwi
Local highlightA giant kiwi with the letters NZ beside it, cut on Beacon Hill in 1919 by New Zealand troops waiting to sail home.
New Zealand soldiers stationed near Salisbury Plain after the First World War faced a long wait for a ship home, and in 1919 they cut this enormous kiwi into Beacon Hill, the letters NZ alongside it. The army has looked after it since, and it is a scheduled monument. The hill is military training land with no public access, so you can only see the kiwi from afar, from the lanes around Bulford. Like the Fovant Badges away to the west, it was cut by serving soldiers rather than to mark a coronation.
