Troops camped at Fovant on their way to and from the Western Front cut their regimental badges into the chalk from 1916, and nine of the original twenty survive. Maintained by the Fovant Badges Society, they are a war memorial made by the men themselves. The badges face the A30 between Salisbury and Shaftesbury, and a layby with a display board gives the clearest view. The nearby outline of Australia was cut by Australian soldiers on the same downs.
