Look up as you pass under the west tower at Batcombe: the fan vaulting spanning the arch is superb, close kin to King’s College Chapel in Cambridge and cut around the same time in the late 1400s. The rest is a fine Perpendicular church of Doulting stone. It’s open to visitors, in a quiet valley a few miles north of Bruton; Bruton station is about 4km south.
Full name: Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Batcombe
