Mells is a Domesday village of honey-coloured hamstone on the Mendip fringe, with a manor house and a famously pretty lane called New Street. St Andrew’s Church is worth the stop: works by Lutyens and Burne-Jones inside, and Siegfried Sassoon’s grave in the yard. Frome station is about 7km to the east.
