Siegfried Sassoon lies in the churchyard here, buried near his friend Ronald Knox. Inside this late-15th-century church at Mells are memorials to match: Alfred Munnings’s bronze of the horseman Edward Horner, killed in 1917, stands on a Lutyens plinth modelled on his Whitehall Cenotaph, and there’s a tapestry after Burne-Jones. Open to visitors; Frome station is about 6km east.
