The Somerset Coal Canal once tried to climb this hill by a “caisson lock”, an experiment that failed and was abandoned; its exact position has never been found. The garden that now covers the ground at Combe Hay is terraced into borders, topiary, ponds and rills around the old canal engineer’s house, restored over the past decade or so. It opens on selected days for a charge, by booked morning or afternoon slot.
