Laid out by the noted cemetery designer John Claudius Loudon and consecrated in 1844, Abbey Cemetery climbs a steep hillside above Widcombe with wide views back over Bath. It’s no longer used for burials — Bath & North East Somerset Council has looked after the grounds since 1995 — but the paths, mature trees and 37 listed monuments are open to walk through at any reasonable hour, free of charge. It’s a short, steep walk up from Bath Spa station, and close to Prior Park if you want to combine the two.
