Somerton is said to have been a Saxon capital of Wessex, though that’s more tradition than record — Winchester was the real seat. Whatever the truth, it grew into a mellow small town, with a market cross, an eight-sided market house and St Michael’s church at its centre, on the edge of the Levels. Yeovil Pen Mill station is about 15km to the south-east.
