Tarr Steps is the longest clapper bridge in Britain — seventeen spans of huge, flat stone slabs laid straight across the River Barle, and probably medieval in origin. It stands in a wooded Exmoor valley that’s now a nature reserve, with riverside paths along either bank. Open access on foot; the car park at the top is a short walk above the crossing.
