Fermyn Woods is one of the better places in England to see the purple emperor, a large woodland butterfly that flies here in high summer. Part of old Rockingham Forest, it pairs a country park with ancient woodland and open meadow. Access is free, with a parking charge. It sits close to the village of Brigstock.
