Sir Humphrey Stafford began Kirby Hall in 1570 and died five years later with the house barely finished; the courtier Christopher Hatton bought it and completed it in high Elizabethan style by 1583. It fell into slow decline through the 18th and 19th centuries, and English Heritage now show it half-roofless and half-restored, with a walled garden replanted from surviving historic plans. It opens through spring and summer, with shorter hours over winter weekends; paid entry. Corby station is about 5km south-west, and Deene Park is a couple of miles east.
