A single broad street of honey-coloured ironstone cottages, many still thatched, runs through Lyddington near Rutland’s southern edge. The pull is Lyddington Bede House, a surviving wing of the medieval Bishops of Lincoln’s palace that later became almshouses, now looked after by English Heritage and open seasonally for its fine timber ceilings. The village makes a good walkers’ base; Corby is the nearest station, about 8km south.
