Places to explore in RutlandEngland · East Midlands
England's smallest county is a quiet expanse of limestone farmland, honey-coloured villages and the great reservoir at its centre. Rutland Water flooded a shallow valley in the 1970s and is now one of the most important inland waters for birds in Britain, with ospreys nesting at Lyndon on its southern shore. The county town of Oakham keeps a Norman great hall hung with horseshoes, and Uppingham its old school and market square. Barnsdale Gardens, created for television, lie just north of the water.
