A double row of 150 yews, some two centuries old, clipped into birds, spirals and pieces of family history — an anchor for a son sent to Dartmouth, a wedding date worked into the foliage. The head forester Amos Alexander began shaping them in 1870, when the avenue led up to Clipsham Hall. It runs for the best part of half a mile through Forestry Commission woodland just outside Clipsham, and it’s free to walk.
