The reason to stop at Tickencote is the Norman chancel arch: six deep bands of carving — beak-heads, zigzags, a king and queen, a green man among them — often called the finest of its kind in England. It and the ribbed stone vault behind it are mid-12th-century; the rest of the church was rebuilt in 1792 by the architect Samuel Pepys Cockerell. Now looked after by the Churches Conservation Trust, near Great Casterton. Stamford station is about 5km to the south-east.
