One of England’s great old coaching inns, the George stands on the Great North Road at the edge of Stamford and vies with the Angel at Grantham for the title of the country’s oldest survivor. Its gallows sign still spans the road, a beam thrown right across it as a welcome to honest travellers and a warning to highwaymen. Inside, the York Bar and London Room once held northbound and southbound passengers while horses were changed; the main block was rebuilt by Lord Burghley in 1597. Stamford station is a couple of minutes’ walk away.
