Exton Park has been a deer park since the Middle Ages, and the Noel family — Earls of Gainsborough — have held it for over 400 years. Footpaths cross it past two set-pieces: the gabled ruin of the Old Hall, an Elizabethan house gutted by fire in 1810 and again in 1915, and Fort Henry, a small lakeside folly of the 1780s where the sixth Earl staged mock sea battles with miniature boats crewed by his servants. The church and Exton village sit at the park’s edge, with Barnsdale Gardens just to the west.
