Rocks by Rail is a working museum of the ironstone railways that once dug and hauled Rutland’s iron ore, on former quarry land near Cottesmore. It’s an open-air site with a reconstructed quarry face and a collection of steam and diesel industrial locomotives and ore wagons from the East Midlands. Trains usually run on the third Sunday of the month, with quieter viewing days in between from Easter to late October; check ahead before travelling. Oakham station is about 6km to the south-west.
