Burley on the Hill is the great house on the ridge a couple of miles east of Oakham, its long south front looking out over Rutland Water. It was built between 1694 and 1700 for Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham, on the site of an earlier mansion burned in the Civil War; Finch acted largely as his own architect, with advice from Christopher Wren, and Humphry Repton later reworked the park. It’s a private house, but public footpaths cross the parkland and the ridge gives wide views south.
