A church standing half in the water is Rutland’s best-known sight. When Rutland Water was flooded in the 1970s, St Matthew’s at Normanton sat below the planned waterline and was due for demolition; instead the lower half was packed with rubble and capped, and an embankment was raised around it, leaving it perched at the water’s edge and reached by a short causeway. It has held a small museum on the reservoir’s history and is now mostly used for weddings and concerts. Worth the walk out along the shore.
