Rows of ironstone cottages and a tree-planted green make Exton one of Rutland’s prettiest estate villages, long tied to the Earls of Gainsborough at neighbouring Exton Park. Its church, St Peter and St Paul, is one of Simon Jenkins’s thousand best, prized for a crowd of grand family monuments and tombs. The Fox & Hounds, a former coaching inn, overlooks the green.
