The county museum fills a handsome Georgian riding school in Oakham, built in 1794–95 for the Rutland Fencibles, a local volunteer cavalry regiment. Inside it’s a museum of Rutland’s rural past: farm wagons and agricultural gear, village trades like wheelwrighting and blacksmithing, and some genuinely odd survivals, including the only intact New Drop gallows left in England. Free to visit, open most of the week. The station is about 800m away, so it pairs easily with the castle and its wall of horseshoes.
