Oakham is the county town of Rutland, England’s smallest county, and its centrepiece is the Norman Great Hall of the castle, built around 1180–90 for Walkelin de Ferrers. The walls are hung with more than 230 ceremonial horseshoes, forfeited by visiting royalty and peers on their first passage through the town, a custom that still runs. Nearby are All Saints’ Church under its tall spire and the free Rutland County Museum of rural life. The station sits right in town.
