By the west tower of Braunston’s church stands a squat carved stone known as the Braunston Goddess, a smiling figure that served for years as the church doorstep before it was turned up and set upright in the 1920s. Its date is unknown but most likely pre-Christian. The village lies south-west of Oakham, about 3.5km from the station there.
