Uppingham is a handsome ironstone market town shaped by its public school, founded in 1584 by Robert Johnson, the archdeacon who set up Oakham’s school the same year. School buildings run through the centre, and the streets around the market place keep independent bookshops, galleries and old inns like The Crown. It’s a good half-day’s browse. The nearest station is Oakham, about 9km north.
