Barnsdale is where Geoff Hamilton filmed BBC Gardeners’ World from 1979 until his death in 1996, and his family still run it. Behind the hedges is Britain’s largest collection of individually designed gardens — 38 themed ‘rooms’ packed into eight acres, from cottage borders to reclaimed-material plots — with a nursery and cafe attached. Open daily, admission charged, just north of Exton and Rutland Water. Oakham station is about 6km to the west.
