Newton's birthplace and the famous apple tree.
This modest limestone farmhouse near Colsterworth is where Isaac Newton was born on Christmas Day 1642. He returned during the plague years of the mid-1660s and did some of his most important thinking here, on light, motion and gravity. The apple tree still stands in the garden — a Flower of Kent, and by the National Trust’s account the very tree of the falling-apple story, regrown after it blew down in 1816. The house and orchard are open as a Trust property; Grantham station is about 11km north.
