A single steep street of stone cottages climbs Rockingham’s hill beneath the walls of its Norman castle, raised on William the Conqueror’s orders and lived in ever since. From the top the view runs north over the Welland into Rutland and Leicestershire. The castle opens to visitors on set days in the warmer months, and East Carlton Countryside Park is close by for a walk. Corby station is about 4km to the south-east.
