Sometimes called the English Versailles, Boughton was rebuilt in French palace style by Ralph Montagu, first Duke of Montagu, in the late 17th century. He set it in a hundred acres of canals and tree-lined avenues, centred on the great reflecting pool known as the Grand Etang. The house passed by marriage to the Dukes of Buccleuch, who hold it still. It stands near Geddington outside Kettering, and Kettering station is about 6km to the south-west. It’s only open to visitors for a handful of weeks a year, around Easter and through the summer, so check dates before setting off.
