Drayton House is one of Northamptonshire’s grandest country houses, home to the Stopford Sackville family and largely out of sight behind its gates near Lowick. It isn’t open casually: visits happen only on pre-booked Wednesdays between Easter and September, for parties of a dozen or more, arranged through the estate office. The formal gardens include ironwork attributed to Jean Tijou and planting by the royal gardener Henry Wise, laid out around 1700. Lyveden, another unfinished garden a few miles north, makes a fitting pair for a visit.
