The poet John Dryden was born in the old parsonage at Aldwincle in 1631, and the historian Thomas Fuller a generation earlier at the other end of the village — the two once had separate parishes, which is why this small Nene-side place still has two medieval churches. All Saints, Dryden’s, is now looked after by the Churches Conservation Trust. Dryden spent the last years of his life not far downriver at Cotterstock.
