Ironstone gives Northamptonshire its warm, honeyed villages and its old name as the county of spires and squires. This is gentle country of low limestone ridges and slow rivers, the River Nene threading east towards the Fens. Much of it was once royal hunting forest, and fragments survive in the oak woods of Salcey Forest and Fermyn. Grand houses stud the land, among them Boughton House, Kirby Hall and the Spencer seat at Althorp. History turned here more than once — the Royalists were broken near Naseby in 1645, and Mary, Queen of Scots met her end at Fotheringhay.
