St Mary the Virgin in Wellingborough is Sir Ninian Comper’s masterpiece, worked on from 1908 to 1930: a soaring interior of gilded and painted stonework, with a rood screen and baldacchino all of his design. From outside it reads as a plain tower on the hill; the richness is all within. It’s open to visitors, and Wellingborough station is a few hundred metres east.
