Sulgrave Manor, a modest Tudor house on the edge of the village, was built by Lawrence Washington after he bought the manor in 1539, making it the ancestral home of George Washington’s family. It’s open to visitors, with gardens and rooms furnished to the period. The village around it is a quiet cluster of ironstone cottages near the Oxfordshire border. Banbury station is about 11km to the south-west.
